MURALS

CONSULTATIONS
The initial consultation is the most important step in the process of creating a mural that meets your desires. During this process the theme is discussed and the desired style starts to emerge. I also like to visit the intended site of the mural to glean additional insight. This helps me determine the correct color palette, paint texture, and over-all level of detail needed to maximize the murals integration into the existing interior design. Seeing the location also helps me better understand the space and come up with design solutions and creative recommendations that might not other wise occur. Additionally, I like to look at any pictures or paintings you may have that could provide insight into the type of 'look' you would possibly like to see reflected in your mural. At this time, I'll also get directions to the location of any specific landscape scenes you may want to consider incorporating in to your mural, if adding a landscape background is part of the look and theme your after. To proceed from the initial meeting, a $50.00 nonrefundable deposit is required to cover the gathering of visual research materials, sketches, and the color make test board(s) for your review. The deposit is applied to the cost of the project upon approval.

DEVELOPMENT
After the consultation, the initial concept development stage begins. Usually I'll start with some black and white sketches and color swatches for review and feedback. To expedite the process, I like to provide electronic files via e-mail, but will provide print files when requested. After changes are made and the layout is approved, I will provide a full color composition of the mural if you feel it's necessary, but typically make a small test board with enough detail to affirm the direction and get your approval. Once the final mural design is approved and signed-off on, a 25% deposit is required with the balance due upon the completion of the project. Once we've worked up a schedule that creates the lest amount of disruption for you, I can start the painting process. If the painting is done off-site in my studio we can make arrangements for regular meetings to assess progress and allow you to make recommendation if desired.

PRODUCTION
The murals I create are painted in acrylics and usually directly on the wall, but I have done them on canvas and wood panels. I usually use a combination of airbrush and paint brush techniques. My primary focus has been on interior settings but not exclusively. Paintings receive a final coat of clear varnish to give them a nice low gloss finish, for protections, safe dusting and maximized longevity.

WORKING ON LOCATION VERSES OFF-SITE
There are advantages and disadvantages to working on-location and working off-site. Working on location and painting directly on a wall – I believe – gives a mural a burst of WOW factor. There's a kind of boldness that says; That's right... I'm here, I'm designed specifically for this space and I'm not going anywhere. This boldness can even be enhanced more when the mural flows over on to adjoining walls and the ceiling. Which is an effect that is hard to make seamless in murals created off-site. The downside of painting on locations is the process can be a little disruptive at times. Also, if you move and want to take the mural with you or want to change the location of the mural... you can't. The upside of painting off-site is there is virtually no disruptions until the installation process begins. If you move or want to change the location of the mural... no problem... you can. Off-site painting also generally results in optimal working conditions and less transportation time, which usually translates to a slightly shorter production time frame.

COST
How much does a mural cost? The short answer is the cost depends on the amount of detail, and other variables such as the size of the space, and whether the space to be painted is located at floor level, or if scaffolding is required. At the initial meeting in your space, I'll show you examples of different levels of detail, and together we can determine what is best for your space and budget. Because custom murals are all unique the cost range is wide. Costs run from between $10 to $30 per sqaure foot. A 5' x 6' mural at 60' sq. ft., with low detail would cost approximately $300 and $900 with high detail. During initial meetings, I can typically assess a projects scope and provide a rough estimate. From there we can adjust the level of detail and/or size of the project down to fit a smaller budget if necessary. Once a projects scope is clearly defined and before I ask for approval to start painting, I provide firm price quotes to avoid any misunderstandings about price.
