DYNAMIC WALL PAINTING
You've seen them – walls that come alive with subtle texture and color changes as well as designs or patterns that make walls look more dynamic. Decorative and faux painting can turn plain walls into exciting walls. Painting with a new color is the most popular way to brighten up a room, but adding a decorative pattern or a faux finish texture that creates the illusion of depth and dimension makes walls more interesting. Faux Finishing enhances the ambiance of a room. It forms the atmosphere that defines a space, creating a multi-dimensional palatte for the senses. And rooms gain a higher level of sophistication that makes surfaces and decorative objects look more beautiful and interesting as well.
TRAINING AND SKILL
I have no formal training in textured surface painting. However, my painting skills and artistic background provide the sensitivity needed to create textured surfaces. I can replicate any textured surface you desire or customize something completely unique specifically for you. The possibilities for textured surfaces are only limited by the imagination. I can create wall finishes using faux glazing techniques like color washing, sponging, ragging, dragging and combing as well as textures like venetian plaster, bellaio and frottage finishes. PRE-PAINTING PROCESS
Decorative Painting - Another way to discribe decorative painting is "Artistic Accents". An example is grapevines. Adding grapevines or other flora to walls is a nice way to add a little color and interest in areas like kitchens and sunrooms. |

| Artistic wall accent |
|
| Artistic accents come in all shapes and sizes – custom work – but a good way to think of them is as mini-murals without background elements. Murals tend to be designed for concentrated areas – on one wall – with a primary subject matter and focal point. Decorative painting on the other hand tends to be more like wallpaper or stencil patterns. The major difference is decorative paintings are usually more random and fluid, sometimes flowing around corners and objects. Decorative painting is a nice way to create visual interest on walls with positive spaces(the art) as well as negative spaces for the eyes to rest in. I approach the decorative painting process the same way as the making of a mural. Please see my Services > Mural Works section for details on how the development and production processes work. |
FAUX COLOR SWATCHES

Faux Finishing - The faux painting selection process starts by discussing the primary function of the room and the desired atmosphere you want the room to have. Then we review swatch samples to identify textures, colors and surface finishes similar to the style you want your room to have. From there we can determine if we want a customized look completely unique specifically for you. Once the basic style and palatte options are determined, I'll create a small set of panels for review prior to starting the project. Because I want you to be ecstatic with the results, I'll provide as many sample panels as needed. Before actually working on the walls or other substrates a clear picture of what the walls will look like is imparative. Because faux finishing usually takes longer than painting walls with solid colors it important to know exactly what your going to do to avoid redos and cost over-runs. Once a panel is finalized and approved then I'll start the project.
PAINTING PREPARATION
Preparation for faux painting is similar to interior painting with two noteable exceptions. Faux finishing usually requires a little more masking and paint set-up time (see Services > Interior House Painting > Preparation Section for details).
PAINTING PROCESS
Creating a stylish faux finish doesn’t have to be a big elaborate deal with layers and layers of paint, especially a simple color wash. Most finishes can be accomplish with two coats or even one if you can use the existing base coat. When I began looking in to interior faux finishes several years ago. I just wasn’t impressed with how difficult the process seemed. Most of the books and articules I read insisted that oil paints and glazes were the only 'professional' way to do a faux finish. I just don’t find that to be true. There are many user-friendly water-based glazes available today to do faux finishing with that produce results that are just as good as oils. These new products make decorative paint treatments alot easier and less time consuming which reduces the amount of labor. They are also usually less costly and easier to clean up, which again saves time and money. Additionally, acrylics and water-based glazes don't smell as much as oils and mineral spirits, which have pungent ordors that can be disagreeable to many people. I'm not opposed to using oil based products – some situation simply demand it – but when it comes right down to it, I detrimine which products and techniques will result in the shortest production time and lest amount of expense without compromising the quality of the final results.
